Which goes on first, fascia or soffit?
Soffit boards usually go on first and the fascia last. The soffit sits in a wall trim and runs up to the rafter ends, and the fascia then fixes on and covers the soffit’s front edge. Always check the roofline system’s fitting instructions, because board profiles differ.
What is the usual fitting order?
- Remove old boards and check the rafter ends and wall plate.
- Fix the wall trim or channel, then the soffit boards, leaving joint-trim gaps.
- Fit the fascia level, covering the front of the soffit.
- Fit over-fascia vents and eaves felt support, then refit the gutter.
Why does the order matter?
The fascia supports the front edge of the soffit, so fitting it before the soffit boards are in place makes the soffit difficult to seat. Vent height also matters: allow for it before the fascia is fixed or tiles can kick up at the eaves.
Is there an exception?
Yes. When fitting capping boards over a sound timber fascia, the cover is fitted to the existing board, and the old soffit is often removed first for access. Some systems use a fascia with a soffit groove. In that case, follow that system’s sequence.
