Is capping fascia better than replacement fascia?
Neither is better in every case. Capping fascia is a thin cover (around 9 mm) fitted over sound timber and is quicker and cheaper. Replacement fascia is thicker, often 16 mm or more, fixed to the rafters and carries the gutter. Choose replacement if the timber is rotten.
When can you use capping boards?
Only when the existing timber fascia is solid and completely free of rot. Capping does not carry load, so it relies on the old board for support, including any gutter fixed through it.
When do you need full replacement fascia?
- Soft, rotten or split timber
- Gutter brackets that no longer hold firmly
- Damaged or missing rafter ends
- New soffit or ventilation being fitted at the same time
What do installers need to check first?
Probe the timber along its full length, especially at joints and behind gutters. Rotten wood must be replaced, not covered. Capping over decay hides a problem that will return. That is the deciding factor on every job.
