Which friction stay do I need for a bedroom window?
For a bedroom escape window, use egress (escape) friction hinges that let the sash open far enough to leave a clear opening of at least 0.33 m², with at least 450 mm in both height and width. Standard friction stays often do not open wide enough.
Which bedrooms need an escape window?
All first-floor habitable rooms need one. Ground-floor habitable rooms need one unless they open directly into a hall leading to an exit door. Applies to floors up to 4.5 m above ground.
What size and height must the opening be?
- Clear opening of at least 0.33 m² unobstructed
- Minimum 450 mm high and 450 mm wide (a 450 mm wide opening must be 750 mm high to reach 0.33 m²)
- Bottom of the opening between 800 mm and 1100 mm above floor level
How do you choose the hinge?
Check the hinge maker’s published clear-opening figures against the window size, then include the egress hinges in the order. Stays should have a release catch. Our casement windows can be built with egress hinges. Confirm the final clear opening on the first unit installed, since small changes in sash size can drop the opening below the limit.
