Can I get a FENSA certificate if I fit my own windows?
No. FENSA only certifies work by its registered installers, and an unregistered fitter cannot self-certify. Instead, the job must be notified to local authority building control, which inspects the work and charges a fee. Scotland and Wales run separate arrangements.
What are your options if you are not registered?
- Join a competent person scheme such as FENSA or Certass, which allows you to self-certify
- Submit a building notice for each job to local building control
- Subcontract the fitting to a registered installer
What will building control check?
The surveyor will check that the new windows meet thermal limits (1.4 W/m²K or Band B), have trickle vents where required, use safety glazing in critical locations and provide escape openings where needed.
What paperwork should you keep?
Keep the BFRC rating, the glass spec and the building control completion certificate, as buyers’ solicitors will ask for them. Our supply-only windows come with the specification data you need. Registration also requires assessment and insurance, so it only pays off if you fit regularly.
