Do you need a new frame with a composite door?
Not always, but most composite doors are supplied as a full doorset with a frame matched to the slab. A slab on its own only suits an existing frame that is sound, square, the right size and has a rebate deep enough for a slab typically around 44 mm thick.
When can a slab go into an existing frame?
- The frame is sound, with no rot, cracks or bowing
- Both diagonals of the opening match within a few millimetres
- The rebate depth takes the slab thickness
- Hinge and lock positions line up or can be altered
Why is a doorset the safer supply?
A doorset gives a matched frame, threshold, seals and locking. That means fewer fit problems for the installer, and the maker’s guarantee and test evidence cover the whole unit.
Do the Building Regulations apply either way?
Yes. In England a replacement external door must meet the energy limits in Approved Document L, with a U-value of around 1.4 W/m²K. Certification comes through the installer’s competent person scheme or building control.
