Can I fit a uPVC door to a wooden frame?
Generally no. A uPVC door leaf is built to suit a uPVC frame’s rebate, gaskets and hardware, so it does not sit properly in a timber frame. For a timber frame, use a door made for it, such as a timber door or a composite slab matched to the rebate.
Why does a uPVC door not suit a timber frame?
- The leaf and frame profiles are designed as a pair
- The gasket and sealing arrangement will not match timber
- Hinge and locking positions are set for a uPVC frame
- Guarantees normally assume a matched uPVC doorset
What should I check on the timber frame?
- The timber is sound, with no rot or damp
- The rebate depth takes the slab thickness; composite slabs are typically around 44 mm
- The frame is square and straight
- The threshold is sound and level
What is the simpler option?
Where the timber frame is poor, a complete uPVC doorset with its own frame is easier to fit and certify. Our trade counter at Unit 1, Friar Walk, Worthing supplies uPVC doors as full doorsets, with free delivery within 30 miles.
