How do I measure for a roof lantern?
Measure the finished upstand or kerb opening, not the lantern you want, then confirm the maker’s rules before ordering. Take width and length at several points, check the diagonals for square, and record the roof pitch and upstand height. Makers differ on which dimension they need.
What do you measure?
- External kerb width and length, at least three readings each, noting the largest
- Both diagonals, to check the kerb is square
- Roof pitch around the opening
- Upstand height above the finished roof surface
- Any obstruction or step near the kerb
Do makers allow for overhang?
Some do. One maker, for example, adds 12 mm to each external kerb dimension to create a drainage overhang, while another needs only the external kerb size. Follow the specific manufacturer’s data sheet.
What goes wrong at ordering?
Small errors cause the biggest problems, such as an out-of-square kerb or a missing upstand. Measure twice, and send the sizes with a sketch so the order can be checked.
