How wide can each bifold door leaf be?
Leaves are typically around 700 to 1,000 mm wide, with three to seven leaves in a set. The true maximum depends on the system, glass weight and whether the door is top-hung or bottom-rolling, so check the manufacturer’s data sheet before ordering.
What limits leaf width?
- Glass weight: wider and taller leaves are heavier.
- Hardware rating: hinges and rollers have a maximum load.
- Operation type: top-hung needs strong head support, while bottom-rolling suits wider openings.
- Height: taller leaves cut the width allowed.
How many leaves fit a given opening?
Divide the opening width by the leaf width you want. A larger set means narrower leaves, more frames in the view and a larger stack at the side, typically 400 to 600 mm.
Where do you find the exact limit?
The system manufacturer publishes maximum width, height and weight per leaf. Do not exceed them, as it voids the product warranty. MLI Building Products can supply data sheets with aluminium bifolds from the Worthing trade counter.
If the opening does not divide neatly, ask the supplier whether the leaves can be made equal or whether a wider end leaf is needed.
