Do all bifold doors need a bottom track?
Yes, in practice every bifold door has a floor track, but only bottom-rolling systems carry the weight on it. On top-hung systems the head track carries the leaves and the floor track simply guides them. Check which type you are ordering before you set out the structure.
What is a bottom-rolling bifold?
The floor track carries the weight and the top track guides the leaves. It is easier to fit, suits wide openings where head support is limited and needs no extra strengthening above the opening. The track collects debris, so it needs cleaning.
What is a top-hung bifold?
The head track carries the weight, so the floor stays clear and operation is smoother. It needs a strengthened opening with a correctly rated lintel and is harder to fit.
Which should installers choose?
Choose bottom-rolling when the structure above cannot be altered. Choose top-hung when a clean floor line and smooth running matter and the head is properly supported. MLI Building Products supplies both types of aluminium bifolds to installers.
