Are externally beaded aluminium windows secure?
Yes, modern externally beaded windows are secure when built correctly. The glazing bead is locked in place by an internal wedge gasket, so the bead cannot be removed from outside. Buy products tested to PAS 24 or Secured by Design, not just any externally beaded window.
How does the bead stay locked in?
The wedge gasket is the last part fitted and holds the bead in place. To reach it, an intruder would need to break the glass on a fixed light or spend a long time prising open a vent.
Why do older windows have a poor reputation?
Early externally beaded uPVC windows had brittle beads that snapped, and they lacked the wedge gasket. Aluminium systems today are designed with the gasket as a lock.
What should installers ask the supplier?
- Is the system tested to PAS 24?
- Is it Secured by Design approved?
- Which locks, hinges and cylinder are fitted?
- Is the glazing laminated on ground-floor openings?
