Are bifold doors difficult to install?
Yes, they are harder than a standard door. Bifold leaves are heavy, the opening must be accurate and level, and the structure above needs the right lintel. Allow two fitters at least, plan the threshold and drainage first and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
What makes bifold doors tricky to fit?
- Weight: even the lightest sets are heavy, often hundreds of kilos in total.
- Accuracy: the head and sill must be level or the leaves will bind.
- Tracks: top-hung and bottom-rolling systems fit differently.
- Threshold: drainage and sealing need setting out before the frame goes in.
What must be done before fitting?
Check the structural opening. Top-hung bifolds need a strengthened opening with the right lintel. If the opening is being widened, Building Regulations approval is needed.
Where does it usually go wrong?
Most callbacks come from an out-of-level sill, a blocked drain or a poorly adjusted leaf. Set the sill first, then hang and adjust each leaf. MLI Building Products supplies bifolds with installation guidance for trade customers.
Read the manufacturer’s fitting instructions before the doors arrive, as tolerances differ between systems.
