Should I order espag or shootbolt locking on uPVC windows?
Order the locking set your fabricator has tested on that exact window, and choose PAS 24 tested hardware where security matters. Espagnolette (espag) locks are the standard handle-driven multi-point option, and PAS 24 tested versions of both espag and shootbolt locks exist.
What is the difference?
- Espag: a locking bar driven by the handle that engages several points on the frame
- Shootbolt: a bolt that shoots into the frame, often chosen as the higher-security or outward-opening option
Does PAS 24 apply to replacement windows?
PAS 24 is the enhanced security test used for Secured by Design and insurers. Approved Document Q mainly covers new dwellings, so for replacement jobs PAS 24 is a specification choice rather than a legal rule for most work.
What about bedroom windows?
Escape windows can have locks, but occupants must be able to open them quickly, for example with a key kept nearby. Check with the fabricator and building control. Our casement windows can be supplied with either lock type. Remember that a lock is tested as part of the whole window, so changing hardware can invalidate a PAS 24 result.
